Joan Reichard Obituary
Joan Midori Hirabayashi Reichard was born in Hawaii on February 7, 1951, and passed to her rest in her home at Hartland on March 2, 2024, aged 73. Joan is survived by husband Richard, mother Dora (107 years old), brothers Glen, Dean, and Mark, daughters Midori and Aiko, and grandchildren Evangeline, Christian, Verity, Enoch, and Eden.
Joan and her husband Richard accepted God’s call to Hartland in 2002. Joan’s first duty station was in the Stewardship Department—caring for donor relations and editing many editions of the Hartland Ministry Report. She continued working there for most of her time at Hartland. Later, she worked as the Dean of Women and in the Business Office. In addition to these roles, she was also a key leader of the annual Piedmont Bible Camps and a copyeditor for Last Generation and Young Disciple.
Joan officially retired at the end of June 2020, after more than 17 1/2 years of service to Hartland. But she continued to copyedit and help in the Business Office and the College Cafeteria. She also coordinated the 2023 Piedmont camp. More recently, she was helping at the Wellness Center.
Of course, this work history does not detail all Joan’s personal ministry, such as the many meals she fed students (including virtually all of the home vespers) and all the driving students to appointments or airports or to town just to shop. She was always happy to serve wherever she was needed. Hartland staff, local church members, and campus visitors were also blessed by her kind and cheerful ministry.
Joan is greatly missed. We thank the Lord for her selfless service, and we’re grateful to have the wonderful hope of seeing her again when Jesus returns.
